Him: Mmmm. Sweetie, it looks fabulous!

Her: It’s “Venitian Egg Glazed Souffle” With a creamed organic pate sauce on the side.

Him: Let me at it! Hey this tastes spinach. It is spinach. And the sauce is a bit of mustard. Let me see.

Her: No, No, don’t take your glasses off! You Promised! You know it’s all virtually enhanced.

Him: I really like the chandelier and candles in the sconces, and the Scandavian setting you picked is fabulous, but you shouldn’t need to cover up the food so much. That virtually enhanced reality is awesome, but it does have it’s limits.

Her: Well, I’m told that it’s a great way to get kids to eat! They can have neon colored, crackelling sand-worms if they want, and it’s still the same organic food they’re eating.

Him: Well, kids, Mmm. Yes, I’ve been thinking about that. He pulls out a small box and opens it. The ring inside is bright and big. Maybe 15 caret solo.

She gasps as he asks: will you marry me?

Holiday time is Cheatin’ time.

I am a student of Romance. I dedicate much time to looking into the ways it impacts our lives and how we can enhance it. How it goes wrong and what to do.

So you can imagine me as I’m checking out search volume on the topic of sex, marriages, cheating and divorce on Google trends. Just look at the combination of “sex” and “cheat” over the last several years.

Sex and Cheating are on our minds at Christmas

Imagine my shock and surprise that there is a strong correlation between ‘sex’ and ‘cheat’ in search keywords. I’m surprised for two reasons. First is the fact that these searches are, after all, on the internet — and if you are really interested in sex and cheating, you may only find the champagne room on the internet, and you must remember what Chris Rock said: “there is NO SEX in the champagne room” — if you want sex and cheating, it is out in the real world, not the internet. The second, and more important, is that people think of sex and cheating more at the very end of the year. And I’m not the only one: “Holiday intimacies aren’t just an American rite, according to Gabriele Doblhammer of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, Germany. Heavy Christmas-New Year’s sex “is characteristic of all Christian cultures in which it has been evaluated,” she and co-researcher Joseph Lee Rogers found.”

Search volume for sex goes up and down on a weekly cycle, with more searches on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A little week-end nookie, no doubt. That weekly cycle is year long, with some seasonal variation.

There is a huge increase in both, simultaneously, during and just after Christmas. What a strange coincidence! And notice how the increase in ‘cheat’ is huge at this time. It almost looks like an obsession at this supposedly holy time of year! How will Christian religions explain this? Is it OK or holy at this time of the year? Is it a spiritual coincidence or does God work in mysterious ways?

OK, so that’s an open question to religious leaders everywhere. What gives???

Wait, there’s more! Look at the peaks for love in this graph: Valentines day in February is when people think of love, and NOT cheating. OK, now this demands another response: Why should we think of love MORE in february rather than at christmas time?

Possible Polyamory? Multiple Monogamy?

I revel in possibilities. Practical alternatives to our stalemate with culture, economics, and society. We have been told over and over that the USA is a ‘free country.’ But in what way? there is absolutely nothing free except air and water, and we are paying big-time for Coke and Pepsi to put baby laxative in our bottled water. Yes, look for magnesium sulfate, folks — It’s baby laxative — and you pay for it?

And so with the most important thing of all,our very most personal relationships. So personal that we hesitate to make a connection lest it damage ourselves, or worse, our partner. And so I am delighted to bring two incredible viewpoints from ladies that are trying to explore new territory and to bring light to what used to be forbidden topics.

The first is from Jenny Block who has given us the insights into an open marriage: a valid agreement for multiple lovers in a committed relationship.

The second is from Suzanne Portnoy who really has had it with monogamy. She is open about liking sex, liking men, and not bashful at all when it comes to saying: “Not Exclusive!” Some would call her a prostitute, but for two things: she does it for free, because she wants to. And with whom she wants to. Both are things that separate her from mere prostitution: she exhibits, neither.

She has authored two books that you should know about: The Not So Invisible Woman, and the erotic memoir: The Butcher, the Baker, the Candlestick Maker.

Can you handle a woman like that? I wonder if many men could, a strong woman should be a national treasure.
